#6 - What is Ketosis?

*Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. I am not a nutritionist. I have done research on the good ole internets and we all know if it's on the internet it must be true (joke). I am just sharing what I have read and my own personal experiences. Nothing I share should be taken as absolute truth. I could be wrong about certain things. If I am, I respectfully welcome you to inform me of my errors. With that being said...*

It is important to understand what "Ketosis" is. I found this handy dandy graphic from PerfectKeto.com that explains the benefits of your body being in ketosis, but I think it's important to understand what ketosis actually is.

I'm going to try to make this as simple as possible for everyone and then I'll include some articles I have found helpful below.

Our body feeds off glucose for fuel. When our body does not have enough glucose, it turns to stored fat to function. Stored fat breaks down in the body when it is starting to be used for fuel. Ketones are built up in the blood and eliminated by urine. Some people buy ketone strips to test their urine to determine the level of ketones in their body. I have used them (the brand I linked), but I don't think they are necessary for success by any means. It is believed that when following a ketogenic diet (keto), you are training your body to fuel off the stored fat for fuel and therefore you lose weight. It is important to note that not everyone follows keto to lose weight...I did, you might, whatevs.

It can take anyone anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks (depending on intake, goals, etc....every body is different) to achieve ketosis. The important part about being in ketosis is you don't want to kick yourself out of it. Eating the wrong type of sugar, too many carbs, etc. is going to kick you out of ketosis and mean you have a "stall" (I hate that term, but it is what it is). When your body is finally in ketosis (again, you can test with the strips if you wish, but I'm sure you'll notice the difference in how you feel), your body is fueling off fat. You achieve ketosis by sticking to the net carb breakdown of 20-30g of carb per day, moderate amount of protein and large amount of fat. Simple right?

I found another great chart from PerfectKeto.com that gives an example of what your "goals" for eating should be around.

Personally, I eat more protein than what is shown, but I do try to keep my carbs in the 5-10% range. You can adjust your macros with MyFitnessPal app to reflect your personal goals.

I hope this has been helpful!

Love,
Sam
